Our patron
Noskowski was born in Warsaw and was originally trained at the Warsaw Conservatory studying violin and composition with Stanisław Moniuszko, graduated with distinction in 1867. A scholarship enabled him to travel to Berlin where between 1872 and 1875, he studied with Friedrich Kiel, one of Europe’s leading teachers of composition. After holding several positions - kapellmeister and conductor of the Bodan Choral Society in Konstanz, Noskowski returned to Warsaw in 1880 where he remained for the rest of his life, professor of composition at the Warsaw Conservatory and conductor of Warsaw Society of Friends and the Warsaw Philharmonic (1905-1908).
He worked not only as a composer, but also became a famous teacher, a prominent conductor and a journalist. He was one of the leading figures in Polish music during the late 19th century and the first decade of the 20th. He taught virtually all of the important Polish composers of the next generation, including Karol Szymanowski[1] and Grzegorz Fitelberg. See: List of music students by teacher: N to Q#Zygmunt Noskowski. He served as head of the Warsaw Music Society from 1880 to 1902 and was considered Poland’s leading composer during the last decade of his life. He died in Warsaw.
While Noskowski is best known for his orchestral compositions, he composed opera, chamber music, instrumental sonatas and vocal works of importance. Discussing Nowkowski's chamber music, the famous critic and scholar Wilhelm Altmann wrote that it was "very effective and deserving of public attention and performance." Judging from the piano quartet written in 1879, one can hear that Noskowski had assimilated the recent musical developments taking place in Central Europe but the music, other than structurally, shows little or no influence of any of the major composers of the time, such as Brahms, Liszt, or Wagner, who were then dominating the scene.
About us
100 years after the death of Zygmunt Noskowski, a great conductor, educator, music journalist, but above all an outstanding composer, a group of young people decided to establish a Foundation in his name. In this way, they wish to pay tribute and, as it were, repay the debt of gratitude to the man who devoted his entire life to promoting Polish music and promoting Polish composers.
The main goal of the Foundation is to support and popularize broadly understood culture and art. We want to achieve this goal by popularizing classical music among the youngest. We plan to organize cyclical educational concerts in Gniezno "In the kingdom of music" and music workshops "Euphoria of art", during which children will be able to come into direct contact with art through meetings with artists and active participation in various activities. We place particular emphasis on integration activities for children and people with disabilities. The Foundation also wants to take an active part in promoting Polish artists, creative achievements and cultural undertakings. We want to support and help in the career development of musically gifted children and youth by organizing Master Music Courses, where young adepts of musical art will have the opportunity to improve themselves under the guidance of the best artists from around the world.
A very important point of the Foundation's activity will be the Chamber Music Festival "Muzyczne Przestrzenie", which, as one of the few in Poland, will bring together so many of the best soloists from Poland and the world, playing together chamber music. The Music Spaces Festival is not only about concerts, but also combining music and architecture by organizing concerts in beautiful palaces, castles and churches in Wielkopolska. We hope that this wonderful musical event will enrich the European canon of classical music with undiscovered works by Polish composers. We would like to place particular emphasis on works from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which were unjustly underestimated and forgotten due to historical turmoil. Through our activities, we want to promote Polish art and architecture abroad, and also promote Wielkopolska as a place of mutual penetration of art and culture between nations.
In the future, the Foundation plans to publish scores of works by Polish composers, which have not been published in Poland until today. Record releases of these forgotten masterpieces are also planned. The founders of the Foundation are Bogumiła and Janusz Wawrowski.
